Arguably, the best kept secret in the North County is Corduff, which is situated on the R132, old Swords to Balbriggan road. The reason for this secrecy, is the fact that there is no signage for Corduff on any of the approach roads, from any direction.
Whilst this secrecy may be appealing to some, the lack of signage is having an adverse effect on the business community of Corduff. So much so, that Balbriggan Local Area candidate in the upcoming local elections, Cathal Boland (NP) spoke to the County Leader, about how the lack of signage is impacting on business in the area. “Ever since the M1 motorway came into existence, there has been no signage whatsoever for Corduff. Business people in the area have been asking for signage to be placed at junctions 4 and 5 on the M1 motorway, in both directions. There are about 13 businesses in the Corduff area, and they are adamant that they deserve proper signage to allow ease of access for customers and delivery services, as well as emergency services,” said Boland.
Local businesswoman, Helen Dunne runs a beauty college in Corduff, and she was very vocal about how her business is being adversely affected by this. Delivery drivers simply don’t know where we are, which is not a very desirable situation, when running a business.” However, ignorance of the existence of Corduff took a bizarre twist a few years ago, when Helen’s premises was broken into. She said, “Balbriggan Gardai were operating out of Lusk Garda Station, and I called them about the break-in. They had no idea where we were located and they ended up in Corduff in Blanchardstown instead. That’s how unknown we are,” said an exasperated Helen.
The only real indication that you are in a village is the local school and Boland believes that there should also be a sign at Blake’s Cross, indicating that Corduff is straight ahead. “There should also be a sign as you enter and leave the village.” Helen Dunne is organising those of us involved in local business, to form a traders’ association, where the business community can work together, to address issues and to form a Neighbourhood Watch scheme,” he said.
